Helleni Yiannakoulakou

Helleni Yiannakoulakou is a Greek self-taught sculptor/artist and instructor of clay sculpture. She has to her credit almost 30 years ofexperience and research in artistic ceramic sculpture. Helleni was born in March 1966 in Kokkinia, Piraeus and grew up in Galatsi, Athens. Her parents have roots from Smyrna and Mani. A restless spirit, creative, extroverted and hardworking, from a very young age. She has been involved and was apprenticed in the cultural workshops of the Smyrnaean Union in various forms of art, training her artistic talent (1974-1980). An amateur artist for many years, in 1996 she began working professionally in ceramic sculpture. In 1998 she created a joint workshop in Mesta, Chios (1998-2004), specialized in the technique of three firings (*lusters). Together, they presented their unique collections in numerous public and private exhibitions in Greece and Italy (Castello di Este, Padova 2002). In 2005, Eleni found herself in the USA, Jackson Mississippi. There, she worked as a medical sculptor/anaplastologist/silicon technician, and gained valuable experience and knowledge at the Alatheia Prosthetic Rehabilitation Center, pioneer in silicon cosmetics’ technology and customized prosthetics. She also worked in Jackson area, as a clay art-therapist for vulnerable local social groups. During this time in America, she completed and presented the “MEMORY” Collection USA 2005-2007 at the SANAA and FISCHER Galleries. In 2007, she returned to Chios and engaged in the organization of educational clay sculpture workshops for children and adults, promoting the art of ceramic sculpture in the visual arts events of the island. In active collaboration with the M.E.O.T.H (Educational and Cultural Association of Thymiana) since 2015, she has been a clay sculpture instructor for children and adults. She also inspired and coordinated the annual event of Sand Sculpture Competition. MOSTRA an annual local custom/event of Thymiana village of Chios, included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Register, includes a representation of a medieval victorius battle with the pirates, and a carnival parade with thematic chariots, and Helleni is the Art Director of MOSTRA. In2018, she moved to London, to live with her two working sons. She herself, among other numerous job roles, she has worked for the NHS, and was also a volunteer clay art therapist. In the three years of her staying there 2018-2021, Helleni had two excibitions of her artwork ( Kensington Town Hall, and Hackney Down Studios), and after the completion of London 2021 Collection, she returned to Greece. For the last four years, Helleni has been living and working in Apokoronas, Chania. She is artistically involved with clay and stone sculpture, organizing workshops/independent educational seminars on sculpture with local clay for children and adults. In order to preserve the independency of her art, Helleni is also working as a seasonal employe.
